Sector Coupling
===============

Our economy, which has been based on fossil fuels to date, has a convenient advantage. As a rough estimate, fossil fuels are continuously available. Sure, every now and then a lignite open-pit mine gets frozen over.

It’s well known that political upheavals can cause market shortages. Lately, this has even become quite a hot topic. But on the whole, nowhere has really run out of oil, gas, or coal so far. And because this is so convenient—and still lucrative for many—it will take enormous effort to fundamentally change this.

When it comes to solar energy, it cannot be entirely dismissed that at night, electricity generation—even with high long-term forecast reliability—is zero. At least locally. After all, the sun is shining on the other side of the globe. There are also clouds, snow, and other uncertainties. With wind power, things become stochastic.

Which brings us to the challenge. Depending on the climate zone, people want to sit in a warm or cool room and watch TV. Factories must produce. Goods need to be transported; airplanes need to fly—24 hours a day. It’s true that the sun is always shining or the wind is always blowing somewhere. At least on a global scale; on a national scale, too, though with some limitations. But building power lines to transmit these amounts of energy around the globe is relatively expensive.

So we need many solutions—and, above all, smart ones.

For example, we should use the power lines mentioned above as effectively as possible.

And it can feed much more energy into the grid if you think creatively. Combining PV and wind generation at the same grid connection point allows for a significant increase in capacity without expanding the power grid.

We planned one of the first wind-PV combination projects in Germany and convinced the grid operator of its benefits. The tricky part was ensuring the simultaneous generation of PV and wind power. As an accredited wind energy assessor and drawing on our experience with numerous PV yield assessments, we were able to resolve this.

The topic of battery storage has gained momentum worldwide due to rapid cost reductions. Germany isn’t quite at the forefront, but it’s determined to catch up.

To this end, we offer the same services as in the wind energy and PV sectors:

• Technical due diligence

• Planning and permitting management

• Grid connection coordination and grid connection planning

Natural Power has been addressing this issue in the UK for some time, as it became relevant there earlier. We can also draw on this valuable experience from project implementation and operation.
